Launch of MumbaiVOICES

www.mumbaiVOICES.com is a collaborative analytical exercise undertaken by experts in humanitarian response, disaster management and human rights, from India and abroad, to record and learn from the experiences of the thousands of Mumbaikars who suffered on 26/11/2008. This project gives ordinary citizens a platform to participate in the city's disaster response analysis
and planning.
How does mumbaiVOICES work?

Data is being collected through web-based survey forms on
www.mumbaiVOICES.com, and through a call-center 39571260, where responders are asked a specific set of questions depending on their role during the terror attacks: Survivor, Relative of the Deceased, First Responder, Media Personnel, Police, Hospital Staff/Doctor, Hotel Staff, etc. All testimonies
are available on-line for public access, and timely analysis conducted by or facult will be posted on www.mumbaiVOICES.com and presented to local city and state agencies.

Has this worked before?

Launched in 2006, after the Mumbai train blasts, this project recorded the testimonies of over 150 citizens of Mumbai -- bystanders, survivors, slum dwellers lining the railway stations who served as critical first-responders. Lessons learnt from those testimonies resulted in a series of activities that culminated in the city's first inter-agency disaster drill focused on medical response (MEMEx – Mumbai Emergency Management Exercise:
www.mumbaiEMEx.org, only seventeen days before the recent strikes.

Who manages mumbaiVOICES?

This month, the Disaster Management Cell of the Municipal Corporation of
Greater Mumbai, the Times Center of Disaster Management at the University of Mumbai, the Narsee Moonji Institute of Management Studies, Times Foundation,
Citizens for Justice and Peace, and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative have come together and form this voluntary network of professionals from India
and abroad. A comprehensive list of the project team is available at
www.mumbaiVOICES.com

Then what happens?

We will give utmost attention to the testimonies; as was the case with 2006, our teams are committed to generating an analysis that recommends action-able steps for civil society and state agencies to implement to strengthen our disaster mitigation, preparedness and response strategies. Analyses will be posted after the one month data collection exercise.

Let your voice be heard!

Sincerely,

mumbaiVOICES Project Team
